How to Make Sea Moss Gel at Home

Making your own sea moss gel at home is one of the most rewarding things you can do for your wellness routine. It’s simple, cost-effective, and gives you full control over what goes into your gel. All you need is raw sea moss, clean water, and a blender.

Here’s everything you need to know to make a perfect batch at home.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 oz (28g) of raw dried sea moss (gold or purple)
  • Filtered or spring water for soaking
  • 1–2 cups of filtered water for blending
  • A high-speed blender
  • A clean glass jar with a lid

Step 1: Rinse the Raw Sea Moss

Place your raw sea moss in a large bowl and rinse it thoroughly under cold running water. You’re removing any sea salt, debris, or sand from the drying process. The sea moss may have a mild ocean scent — this is completely normal and will disappear after soaking.

Step 2: Soak Overnight

Cover the rinsed sea moss with filtered or spring water and let it soak for 12–24 hours at room temperature. During this time, the sea moss will expand significantly — up to 3–4 times its original size — and soften into a gel-like texture.

Tip: Use the best quality water you can. We make our gels with reverse osmosis water for the cleanest result.

Step 3: Drain and Rinse Again

After soaking, drain the water and give the sea moss one more rinse under cold water. At this point it should look plump, translucent, and slightly gelatinous.

Step 4: Blend

Add the soaked sea moss to your blender with 1–2 cups of fresh filtered water. Start with less water for a thicker gel, or add more for a smoother, pourable consistency. Blend on high for 1–2 minutes until completely smooth with no chunks remaining.

Optional add-ins: You can blend in organic ingredients like cinnamon, maple syrup, moringa powder, or ashwagandha at this stage to create your own flavoured gel.

Step 5: Store in the Fridge

Pour your finished gel into a clean glass jar and seal it. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 weeks. The gel will firm up as it cools — this is normal. You can also freeze sea moss gel in ice cube trays for up to 3 months, then thaw individual portions as needed.

How to Use Your Sea Moss Gel

  • Add 1–2 tablespoons to smoothies or juices
  • Stir into oatmeal, yogurt, or overnight oats
  • Use as a thickener in soups, stews, or sauces
  • Apply directly to skin as a hydrating mask
  • Mix into teas or warm drinks

How Much Sea Moss Gel Does 1 oz of Raw Sea Moss Make?

One ounce (28g) of raw sea moss typically yields approximately 2–3 cups of finished gel, depending on how much water you add during blending. Our 2 oz raw sea moss bag will make roughly 4–6 cups of gel — a great economical option if you use sea moss daily.

Prefer Ready-Made?

If you’d rather skip the prep, our ready-made sea moss gels are crafted in small batches in Canada using wildcrafted St. Lucian sea moss and reverse osmosis water — with no preservatives, fillers, or shortcuts. Available in plain gold, purple, and superfood blends.
